Not everyone wants to spend their weekends weeding and mowing, and there’s no reason you should have to. A low-maintenance garden isn’t a dull one, it’s simply designed to look after itself a little more. With the right choices, you can have a beautiful space that gives you far more than it asks for.
Choose plants that earn their keep
The foundation of any easy garden is reliable, hard-working plants. Shrubs, ornamental grasses and tough perennials need far less attention than fussy bedding that has to be replaced every season. Once established, plants like hardy geraniums, lavender and euphorbia largely look after themselves.
Grouping plants with similar needs together also makes life easier. When everything in a border wants the same amount of water and sun, you spend less time fussing over individual plants.
Reduce the lawn, not the greenery
A pristine lawn is one of the most demanding features in any garden. You don’t have to lose it altogether, but shrinking it or reshaping it into simple, mowable curves cuts the work considerably. The space you reclaim can become a planted border, a gravel area or a quiet seating spot.
Where a lawn isn’t practical, ground-cover planting or good-quality gravel gives you greenery and texture without the weekly mow.
Let mulch do the weeding
A thick layer of mulch, such as composted bark or well-rotted manure, is one of the best labour-saving tricks there is. It smothers weeds before they take hold, locks moisture into the soil so you water less, and feeds your plants as it breaks down. Topping up the mulch once a year is far quicker than weeding all summer.
Design out the hard work
Thoughtful design removes chores before they begin. Generous, deep borders are easier to maintain than lots of fiddly little beds. Permanent edging stops grass creeping into borders. Automatic irrigation can take care of watering in dry spells, and choosing durable paving means less upkeep underfoot.
A low-maintenance garden is really just a well-planned one, designed around the time you actually want to spend in it. If you’d like a beautiful outdoor space that doesn’t tie you to a lifetime of chores, GardenCare would be delighted to help you plan it.
