The Secret to a Thick, Healthy Lawn
Feeding, mowing, and aeration tips for a lawn that stays lush and green all year.

A lush, green lawn is the heart of many British gardens, yet it’s also the feature people struggle with most. The good news is that there’s no real secret to it, just a handful of simple habits done at the right time. Get these right and your grass will grow thicker, greener and far more resistant to weeds and moss.
Feed and water wisely
Grass is a hungry plant, and a lawn that’s never fed will slowly thin and pale. A spring feed encourages strong, green growth, while an autumn feed strengthens the roots for winter. In dry spells, the occasional deep soak does far more good than a light daily sprinkle, which only encourages shallow, drought-prone roots.
Don’t cut it too short
The most common mistake is mowing too low. Scalping the lawn weakens the grass, lets weeds and moss move in, and leaves the soil exposed to drought. Raising the blades so you only ever take off the top third of the grass keeps it healthier and greener. In high summer, leaving it a little longer helps the lawn cope with heat.
Tackle thatch and compaction
Over time, a layer of dead material called thatch builds up at the base of the grass, and the soil beneath becomes compacted. Both stop air, water and nutrients reaching the roots. Raking out the thatch, known as scarifying, and spiking the lawn to aerate it once a year makes a remarkable difference to how the grass grows.
Stay ahead of moss and weeds
Moss and weeds are usually a symptom rather than the real problem. They move in where grass is weak, often in damp, shaded or compacted areas. Improving drainage, letting in more light and keeping the grass well fed will do more in the long run than reaching for the weedkiller. A thick, vigorous lawn naturally crowds most weeds out.
A healthy lawn is the reward for a little care at the right moments rather than constant hard work. If your grass is looking tired and you’d like it restored to something you’re proud of, GardenCare can help you get it back into shape.
